The demand for Elevation Certificates has never been higher due to driving forces such as Biggert-Waters and the Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Acts that are reforming the NFIP. This course will provide an in-depth look into how the Elevation Certificate (FEMA form 086-0-33) is utilized by the Insurance Industry to rate a property’s flood risk for NFIP Flood Insurance. In addition, it will explain how a local municipality uses the form to enforce their Floodplain Management Ordinance. At the end of the course participants will be better equipped to complete the Elevation Certificate correctly, more accurately, and improve their overall client’s experience by explaining NFIP red flags before a customer simply accepts a high NFIP premium. Case studies will be used to illustrate what flood loss preventive solutions are available and how to identify possible solutions using the Elevation Certificate that can dramatically lower an owner’s NFIP premium. 

Agenda:
• Review the Biggert-Waters and Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Act, who is it affecting, what changes are taking place, and how is Elevation Certificate demand rising as a result. 

• Explain how the NFIP rates the flood risk for a property using the Elevation Certificate. We will identify what sections of the Elevation Certificate are most critical when rating risk.  During this section we will play the role of a Floodplain Manager to understand how they will be using the Elevation Certificate to ensure compliance with their Floodplain Ordinance. 

• Completing the Elevation Certificate accurately with a review of how to choose the right Building Diagram using Section C and examples. How to document flood vents with a review of compliant vs. non-compliant openings and FEMA’s Technical Bulletin 1. Examples of incorrectly completed Elevation Certificates will be used to illustrate completeness and compliance.

E. Tyler Ardron, CFM, Vice President, Risk Reduction Plus Group
E. Tyler Ardron is a Certified Floodplain Manager and a Licensed Insurance Broker. As the Vice President of Risk Reduction Plus Group he leads a team of Flood Insurance experts that focus on reducing flood insurance costs for property owners utilizing FEMA mitigation techniques and proper rating strategies. Over the past 5 years Tyler has worked closely with communities in and out of the Community Rating System program to educate residents on flood insurance. In addition he helps communities with cleaning up non-compliance issues that lead to insurance increases by deploying the Flood Risk Evaluator process which he helped develop as a tool for not only industry professionals but also homeowners. Tyler also offers all other lines of property insurance. Tyler enjoys traveling the country educating professionals on the use of the Elevation Certificate as it pertains to flood insurance and how the data translates into a premium for a property owner. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, watching local sports teams, and spending time with his wife, 7-year-old son, and two German Sheppards.

Bryan Newman, Flood Mitigation Specialist, Smart Vent Products, Inc
Brian Newman graduated from University of Connecticut in 2004 with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and also from New England Tech in 2011 with a Bachelor’s in Construction Management. With 15+ years in the construction industry, he now studies the science of flood mitigation with a concentration in proper wet and dry floodproofing techniques to ensure resilient structures. As Flood Mitigation Specialist for Floodproofing.com + Smart Vent Products, Inc., Brian works with local and county government entities to meet regulation standards specific to building and residential codes.  He is also an educator on flood mitigation for architects, surveyors, engineers, insurance agents, realtors, builders, and home owners.  In conjunction, he also analyzes the role of building compliance in securing and lowering flood insurance rates and what mitigation solutions are available through Smart Vent Products, Inc.’s Flood Risk Evaluator (FRE) division.
