Continue our discussion of species biology by observing a variety of habitats, and discuss how herps would use them. Search for herps, and learn how to handle and identify them.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

New Hampshire is home to six State-listed reptiles, two State-listed amphibians, and five additional Herps of Special Concern. Especially if you live and work in southern New Hampshire, projects that you work on may need to consider avoiding and minimizing impacts to these species. Many projects can take simple steps to benefit and conserve these species. This workshop will provide an overview of the biology and distribution of these species, and the development and maintenance practices that can avoid and minimize impacts to them. The afternoon field session will examine various habitat types and how herps use them. We will actively search for herps, and hand capture and identify those that we find.

PRESENTER

Jim Andrews has been working full time as a herpetologist/wildlife biologist in Vermont since 1990. He coordinates the Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas Project, teaches college level herpetology courses, runs herpetological research and education projects, and provides independent consulting and herpetological survey. Jim works closely with state, federal, and private agencies, including VTrans, to conserve herps and other wildlife species throughout Vermont.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
Please wear clothing appropriate for an afternoon in the field, rain or shine. We will visit both upland and wetland habitat, waterproof footwear may be desirable, but not necessary.
