Updates from Massachusetts Board of Registration of PEs and PLSs - October 2016

October 11, 2016 PE and PLS (EN) Board of Registration Committee on Professional Competency (CPC) Meeting 

At this meeting, the Committee on Professional Competency (CPC) discussed potential language related to mandating continuing education for license renewal.  At this point in time, the committee is looking to recommend 18 Professional Development Hours during each biennial registration renewal period to maintain theoretical, technological and business profiency for one's scope of practice, unless exempt under 5.10(7). The Committee also discussed the merits of mandatory continuing education requirements. The CPC plans to present its recommendations to the full Board of Registration at its November 17, 2016 meeting.

The Board discussed these issues:

• Trade/Design Build Exemption in MGL c. 112, s. 81R (a);
  • Division of Professional Licensure: No single board can take on issuing guidance on this. Nothing will be happening on this issue.
• Foreign engineering degrees without humanities courses – does this meet EIT or PE requirements? 
  • The Board formed a committee to examine this issue: Board Members Ron Willey, Paul Tyrell, Paul Tsang will meet at 8 AM on November 17. This is an open meeting at DPL.
• How to consider licensure for people who take the Principles and Practices exam early from other states applying for comity; 
  • The Board formed a committee to examine this issue: Board Members Paul Tyrell, Dennis Drumm and Joel Goodmonson will meet at 11 AM on November 17 on this issue.  This is an open meeting at DPL.
• Job titles under 250 CMR 5.08 
  • Board Counsel Sheila York will draft policy for board to consider on this issue.
