Dear Members of MALSCE,
This is the first installment of my President’s Message since our 2024 convention and I would like to acknowledge a few of the program’s achievements. Most notably, we had 152 attendees over this two-day event, which is the highest number of attendees in more than a decade. The Plan and Field Notes Contests also had the highest number in many years with 42 entries. Congratulations to our winners! Six of the nine sessions were highly rated by more than 80% of the respondents to our attendee survey. I’d like to thank everyone who provided valuable feedback by responding to this survey. Additionally, I would like to thank our convention planning committee for their hard work in organizing and hosting this successful event. We have begun planning for the 2025 MALSCE Convention and will discuss the feedback from this year’s convention attendees during upcoming planning meetings.
Over the past months, we held the Principals and Practice Refresher Course for those individuals preparing for the PS Exam and the UAV Mapping Educational Series, featuring five webinars presented by University of Maine Professor Ray Hintz, PLS, PhD.
The Board of MALSCE is committed to upholding the standards of our profession and enforce the professional practice standards of 250 CMR. We have formed a committee to address increasing awareness and compliance with 250 CMR. I invite members interested in assisting with this effort to please contact Rich Keenan at rkeenan@engineers.org and to attend our June 12 MALSCE Board & Chapters Dinner Meeting or the June 7 MALSCE Proprietors’ Council Luncheon Meeting.
Reporting on other matters, we continue to focus on providing educational opportunities for the “young” survey technicians in the profession. I am hopeful that we can team up with the educators from the University of Maine to provide future webinars for these MALSCE members. Our Public Awareness Committee continues to hold their monthly meetings during which chair David Prince provides updates and the group’s outreach to local high schools and vocational schools is discussed. Lastly, I encourage everyone to donate to the MALSCE Education Trust, which seeks to enhance the profession of land surveying and civil engineering by awarding scholarships and grants to students and educators. As MALSCE president, I continue to be honored to serve this association and lead in the mission to promote the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in our field. MALSCE is here to foster the development of the profession, share knowledge, and create resources that benefit us all. Together, we can continue to advance the field of land surveying and provide valuable services to our clients and communities. I hope that you find MALSCE’s undertakings and my monthly MALSCE News President’s Messages helpful in this regard.
Thank you,
Ken Conte, President
