Dear Members of MALSCE,
This last installment of my President’s Message for 2023 will focus on the goals and issues discussed during the North East Surveying Societies (NESS) meeting held at the Rhode Island Society of Professional Land Surveyors (RISPLS) and Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors (CALS) annual conventions. Additionally, MALSCE leadership and the hosting Cape Cod Chapter are finalizing the planning of the 2024 Convention on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, 2024, at the Boxboro Regency Hotel & Conference Center. We will be announcing the details in the next several weeks. We continue to request and are ready to accept your plan and field notes submissions for the convention’s 2024 Plan and Field Notes Contests. Click here to learn more.
We continue to provide continuing education opportunities. We are currently accepting registrations for our 15th Annual Legal Perspectives on Land Surveying seminar that is being held on Friday, January 26, 2024, at The Conference Center at Waltham Woods. Click here to learn more including how to register and pay for this program online. This past month, we held the second NSPS Certified Floodplain Surveyor (CFS) Training and Certification Program. A re-take exam is scheduled for January 10, 2024, for those participants that did not pass the exam.
We continue to focus on providing educational opportunities for the “young” survey technicians in the profession. We are hopeful that we can team up with the educators from the University of Maine to provide a webinar in the future. Additionally, during this season of giving, I would encourage everyone to donate to the MALSCE Education Trust, which seeks to enhance the profession of land surveying and civil engineering by awarding scholarships and grants to students and educators. In November, I had the honor of representing MALSCE at the CALS and RISPLS annual conventions’ NESS President’s meetings with representatives from the five other NESS member associations – CALS, Maine Society of Land Surveyors (MSLS), New Hampshire Land Surveyors Association (NHLSA), New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors (NYSAPLS), and Vermont Society of Land Surveyors (VSLS), and others. The purpose of the meetings was to discuss common issues, goals, and objectives that we have encountered and to brainstorm ideas to improve the current conditions that we face. The common topic discussed was how do we improve the younger generation’s perception of pursuing a career in land surveying. The need to attract “young” surveyors is critical to the growth of the profession. We discussed each association’s Young Surveyors Network and how we can support these groups and help them attract additional members. We talked about improving our professional development opportunities for the technicians. Each organization is committed to the goal of increasing enrollment of survey technicians. I reported on our Public Awareness Committee’s outreach to local high schools and vocational schools and their plans to exhibit at the 2024 convention of Massachusetts high school guidance counselors.
As MALSCE president, I continue to be honored to serve this association and lead in the mission to promote the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in our field. MALSCE is here to foster the development of the profession, share knowledge, and create resources that benefit us all. Together, we can continue to advance the field of land surveying and provide valuable services to our clients and communities. I hope that you find MALSCE’s undertakings and my monthly MALSCE News President’s Messages helpful in this regard.
Thank you,
Ken Conte, President
